Phnom Penh, Cambodia – The Mekong Institute (MI) convened its biannual Governing Board Meeting on December 16 and 17, 2024, hosted by the Royal Government of Cambodia. This two-day event commenced with a Special Steering Committee Meeting on December 16, chaired by Dr. Narongchai Akrasanee, Academic Representative to the MI Council. The following day featured the Council Meeting, led by H.E. Mr. Chea Chantum, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Population and Development at the Ministry of Planning.
The meetings brought together representatives from all GMS countries and key development partners, including members from the New Zealand Aid Programme, academia, and MI’s honorary advisor. Together, they evaluated past performances and established future priorities.
As MI approaches its 29th anniversary, these meetings are pivotal in determining the strategic direction of the Institute amid evolving challenges and opportunities within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The Governing Board engaged in discussions to ensure MI’s adaptability to both ongoing and emerging regional issues. Notable outcomes included:
- Endorsement of MI’s Work Plan for 2025: This plan aims to enhance MI’s relevance and operational effectiveness in addressing regional challenges.
- Approval of Strategic Plan Evaluation Concept Note: The board endorsed a concept note for evaluating MI’s current Strategic Plan (2021-2025) and formulating a new Strategic Plan for 2026-2030.
- Preparations for MI’s 30th Anniversary: Plans are underway to celebrate this significant milestone.
- Mekong Forum 2025: The flagship annual event is scheduled for July 30-31, 2025, in Phnom Penh, focusing on inclusive and resilient GMS and new economies.
The meeting acknowledged MI’s achievements throughout 2024 in fostering regional cooperation and integration within the GMS, particularly highlighting increased recognition of the Institute during various high-level meetings and events.
Following the meetings, the Royal Government of Cambodia organized a visit for Governing Board members to the SOSORO Cambodia Museum of Economy and Money on December 17. This visit provided valuable insights into Cambodia’s economic history, particularly concerning monetary development and its implications for growth and inflation.
On December 18, Governing Board members further explored economic development in Sihanoukville province. Their itinerary included a tour of the Sihanoukville Deep-Sea Port, an important infrastructure project that plays a significant role in Cambodia’s economic growth and integration into global trade networks.
The next MI Governing Board Meetings are scheduled for July 2025 in Phnom Penh, coinciding with the Mekong Forum 2025. These upcoming sessions will continue to build upon the strategic foundations laid during this recent gathering, ensuring that MI remains a pivotal player in promoting sustainable development across the Greater Mekong Subregion.
