Khon Kaen, Thailand – On December 26, 2024, the Mekong Institute (MI) hosted a momentous ceremony to formalise its partnership with the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (UEH), through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. This strategic alliance signifies a shared commitment to fostering sustainable development and regional collaboration in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
The ceremony commenced with introductory remarks from Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, Executive Director of MI, who underscored the pivotal role of this partnership in addressing the region’s pressing challenges. He acknowledged UEH as a competent and forward-thinking institution, expressing gratitude for the introduction facilitated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirisak Laochankham, Dean of the College of Local Administration (COLA), Khon Kaen University. Mr. Suriyan highlighted MI’s readiness to deepen collaboration with UEH, particularly in aligning efforts towards shared development goals.
Dr. Dinh Cong Khai, Vice President of UEH, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the alignment between MI’s thematic areas and Viet Nam’s current priorities. He noted that both organisations are grappling with similar regional challenges, which makes this partnership a timely and strategic endeavour. Dr. Khai extended an invitation to MI to visit UEH to further strengthen ties and discuss a detailed cooperation plan for 2025 and beyond.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirisak Laochankham delivered congratulatory remarks, highlighting the significance of this collaboration as a foundation for nurturing future growth in the region. He stressed the importance of close cooperation to expand the community and strengthen the collective future of the GMS.
The event featured presentations by both organisations, showcasing their expertise and vision for sustainable development. MI provided an overview of its efforts in promoting regional cooperation, while UEH highlighted its status as a multidisciplinary university with global influence, renowned for its innovative programmes and research contributions. With over 30,000 students and a robust network of international partners, UEH exemplifies academic excellence and global collaboration.
The MoU, signed by Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn and Dr. Dinh Cong Khai, formalises a framework for collaboration, including joint research, academic exchanges, policy consultancy, and capacity-building initiatives. The partnership will also explore avenues for internships and knowledge sharing, aimed at fostering innovation and resource mobilisation for sustainable development in the GMS.
