The Mekong Institute (MI) is pleased to welcome H.E. Mr. Somboun Sihanath, Director-General of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lao PDR, as the new Chair of the MI Council for 2025–2027.

Guided by the theme “Connectivity and Resilience: From Policy to Action,” Mr. Sihanath will lead MI through the conclusion of its 2021–2025 Strategic Plan and the launch of the 2026–2030 cycle.

Key highlights under his leadership include MI’s 30th anniversary in 2026, Governing Board meetings in Champasak (2025) and Luang Prabang (2026), and the Mekong Forum 2027.

We warmly welcome H.E. Mr. Sihanath and look forward to his leadership in deepening regional cooperation across the Greater Mekong Subregion.
