MI Strengthens Partnership with New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Khon Kaen, Thailand, October 7, 2025 — The Mekong Institute (MI) welcomed Ms. Dana Avram, Council Member representing the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and First Secretary (Development) at the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok.

Ms. Avram was received by Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, MI Executive Director. The courtesy visit reaffirmed the strong and longstanding partnership between MI and the New Zealand Government, and provided an opportunity to explore areas for future collaboration.

During the meeting, both sides discussed New Zealand’s continued support to MI and its intention to align future cooperation with MI’s forthcoming Five-Year Strategic Plan (2026–2030) and Program Framework. This shared vision reflects a mutual commitment to deepen strategic collaboration and advance sustainable and inclusive development across the Mekong region.

The discussions also covered potential co-hosted activities under the new strategic framework, including the Mekong Forum 2026 and a special side event to commemorate MI’s 30th Anniversary in 2026. Both parties further expressed interest in jointly organizing an event to mark the 70th anniversary of Thailand–New Zealand diplomatic relations, highlighting the enduring partnership and friendship between the two nations.

As part of the visit, Mr. Suriyan introduced Dr. Ornuma Pholpanich, Program Director of Agricultural Development and Commercialization, who provided updates on ongoing MI projects supported by the New Zealand Government through MFAT.

Before concluding her visit, Ms. Avram also met participants of MI’s ongoing training program, “Climate-Smart Agriculture for Sustainable and Safe Crop Production,” funded by MFAT. She expressed her appreciation for MI’s continued efforts in promoting regional cooperation and fostering sustainable agricultural development across the Mekong subregion.
