A Thailand-based intergovernmental organization (IGO), the Mekong Institute (MI) joined the Kingdom of Thailand in honoring the life of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, who passed away on October 24, 2025, at the age of 93. She was the mother of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X).
“The Mekong Institute stands with the Thai community in remembering the Queen Mother’s lifelong devotion to the well-being of the Thai people. Her compassion and commitment to advancing health, culture, and sustainable livelihoods continue to inspire our efforts toward a resilient and caring region,” said Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, MI Executive Director, during a memorial program with MI staff on November 4, 2025 at the MI Residential Training Centre in Khon Kaen, Thailand.
As Queen Consort to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), Queen Sirikit championed initiatives that strengthened community capacity and expanded humanitarian outreach. Through her support for vocational training in handicrafts, agriculture, and conservation, she helped create livelihood opportunities and promote sustainable development for rural communities. Her patronage also supported cross-border cooperation in traditional crafts and community development, strengthening Thailand’s engagement with neighboring countries.
During the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, MI received formal recognition as an IGO through a Royal Decree, underscoring Thailand’s commitment to regional cooperation and development.
The Queen Mother’s legacy aligns with MI’s mission to build capacity, foster regional collaboration, and promote shared development in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). MI honors her memory by reaffirming its dedication to cooperation, training, community resilience, and regional development.
