Khon Kaen, Thailand, May 8, 2026 – To discuss further regional energy cooperation, the Mekong Institute (MI) welcomed a delegation from the Lancang-Mekong Energy Consulting (Guangdong) Co., Ltd. (MECC), a wholly owned subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid Lancang-Mekong International Co., Ltd. (CSG-LMI). The visit builds on the growing cooperation between MI and MECC, which started in July 2024 with MECC’s first visit to MI, and has since led to an energy forum in Vientiane, Lao PDR in November 2024 and a 2025 research initiative on power enterprise governance in the Lancang-Mekong (LM) region.
MI Executive Director Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn recalled how MI has maintained a longstanding partnership with MECC’s parent company, China Southern Power Grid (CSG), since 2015. This partnership was further reinforced through the signing of a Cooperation Framework Agreement in April 2022. Today, MI and CSG, through the MECC, reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing regional energy cooperation and sustainable development in the LM region.
“Over the years, this collaboration has delivered significant achievements in regional energy connectivity and capacity development,” said Mr. Suriyan. “We look forward to closer collaboration with the MECC on both technical and policy levels. Our common goals for the energy sector in the LM region make this partnership both promising and indispensable.”
Previously, the partners facilitated 12 bilateral energy agreements, connected LM policy leaders with international energy experts, and empowered more than 610 “power fellows” to champion clean power connectivity across the region. The partnership has also contributed to the automation of power distribution systems in Viet Nam and enhanced regional power trading within the LM region.
Ms. Ban Lina, MECC Deputy General Manager and an MI training alumna, expressed a strong willingness to further strengthen cooperation with MI and deepen collaborative efforts to support sustainable and resilient energy development in the LM region.
