Mekong Institute (MI), with support from Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), is conducting a one-week modular training program on ‘Enhancing the Utilization of FTAs by SMEs.’ The training will run from December 4-8, 2017 at the MI Residential Training Center, Khon Kaen, Thailand.
The training is designed to improve knowledge of small and medium-sized enterprises as well as government and private sector actors in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) on the ASEAN, and inform them of emerging trade issues relevant to the GMS, which can improve greater utilization of free trade agreements (FTAs) in regional and international trade. Overall, the training hopes to provide participants with a better understanding of FTAs with ASEAN country members, trade opportunities for SME exporters, and procedures and requirements in utilizing these FTAs.
A mix of participants from the GMS countries are expected to join, coming from relevant government agencies, Chambers of Commerce and Industry, business associations, SME exporters, and Business Development Service (BDS) providers.
Applying the modular training approach, the program will kick off with the training in December that focuses on four interrelated modules: conceptual framework of RTA/FTA and implications in regional SME context; negotiating issues in a FTA; accessing trade benefits of FTA; and promoting utilization of FTAs by SMEs.
The second phase of the training program will involve the action plan implementation of the participants in their respective countries. Activities can include localized trainings and coaching SMEs on utilizing FTAs. It will finally conclude with a synthesis and evaluation workshop in the first quarter of 2018 to discuss lessons learned and best practices.
