Mekong Institute (MI), in cooperation with China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG) / Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd. (YNPG), organized a workshop on Power Market Construction and Development on September 25-26, 2019. Held at MI Residential Training Centre in Khon Kaen, Thailand, the workshop brought together 48 technicians and middle management personnel from the national energy authorities along with representatives from the power utilities in the Lancang-Mekong Region.
The one-and-a-half-day workshop covered cross-border and transnational power market construction practices as well as the current national situation of power market construction and future development plans. All delegates have recognized the importance of regional power grid interconnection and cross-border power trade, and have exchanged ideas on best practices of regional power market construction and development.
Presentations during the plenary session introduced China’s electricity restructuring, market construction and operation, and challenges and lessons learned in clean energy utilization and consumption. It also focused on promoting the construction of regional electricity market, prioritizing optimal allocation of power resources, and maximizing prospects for efficient operation of the power market in the Lancang-Mekong Region.
Capping off the event, Dr. Watcharas Leelawath, Executive Director of MI, expressed gratitude to CSG, YNPG, and CSG Yunnan International Co., Ltd. (YNIC) for its constant support and cooperation. He also reiterated MI’s commitment to further promoting regional power connectivity by joining forces with the aforementioned development partners. Likewise, Mr. Si Shuming, Board Chairman of YNIC and Vice President of YNPG, thanked Dr. Leelawath and MI organizing team as well as the participants for making the workshop a success. He asserted that the CSG-MI cooperative program will continue to produce even more fruitful outcomes in the future.
