MI CO-ORGANIZES A TRAINING COURSE ON “GOOD AGRICULTURAL AND POSTHARVEST PRACTICES IN FRESH PRODUCE” IN CAMBODIA NOVEMBER 11-13, 2014.

Agricultural Development and Commercialization

Department of Crop Protection, Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary of the General Directorate of Agriculture (GDA), Kandal Provincial Department of Agriculture, and the Mekong Institute jointly organized a localized training on “Good Agricultural and Postharvest Practices in Fresh Produce” at the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Kandal province on November 11-13, 2014. Twenty four of agricultural extension workers and farmer-leaders from districts and provincial level attended the training course, the aim of which is to improve the participants’ understanding of GAP in promoting quality and safety in vegetable produce. Serving as trainers are the four Cambodian alumni of the Mekong Institute training-of- trainers (TOT) course on GAP who developed the training package for this course. 

Mr. Hou Sophal, Deputy Director of Kandal Provincial Department of Agriculture and Mr. Mean Chetna, Representative of Department of Crop Protection, Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary of GDA welcomed all the participants. Mr. Hou Sophal emphasized in his opening remarks the significance of the GAP approach as a guide to ensure and promote safe food production and sustainable resource management. This will result to healthy foods and better food quality while taking into account economical, social, and environmental sustainability, creating new market opportunities for farmers and exporters particularly in the context of integration of ASEAN Economy Community (AEC) by 2015. At the end of his remark, he encouraged the extension workers and farmer-leaders to pay attention to the training course and to continue to support and encourage farmers to apply the principles of Good Agricultural Practice in their farms.

Mrs. Guohua Liu

Director, Sustainable Energy & Environment (SEE) Department

Mrs. Liu Guohua is the Director of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Department at the Mekong Institute. Prior to this role, she worked in the Department of International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, where she played a key role in shaping and implementing China’s cooperation strategies with UN development agencies. During this time, Mrs. Liu was actively involved in advancing initiatives related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on climate change and green development. Additionally, she contributed to the evaluation of projects funded by various Chinese initiatives, such as the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund, etc.

In addition to her work in the Department of International Economic Affairs, Mrs. Liu has an extensive diplomatic background. She spent 7 years in the Department of African Affairs, followed by a 4-year tenure at the Chinese Embassy in Lao PDR, where she gained deep expertise in both Southeast Asian and African affairs. These diverse experiences have played a crucial role in shaping her approach to sustainable development and international collaboration, particularly in building regional partnerships and tackling global challenges like climate change.

She holds a Master’s degree in Economics, with a specialization in Finance, from the Central University of Finance and Economics, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, specializing in International Economics and Trade, from the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics.
