MI AND PARTNERS KICK OFF R&D ON CONNECTIVE ENERGY SYSTEMS

Innovation and Technological Connectivity

Mekong Institute (MI), China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. (CSG), Yunnan Power Grid Co., Ltd. (YNPG), and seven other universities, research institutes, and business enterprises have partnered to strengthen connective multi-energy systems in the Mekong region for more efficient and reliable energy source and use.

“MI has long been a trusted partner of the energy and power sector in the region. By continuing our work with CSG and YNPG, we are committed to bridge public-private partnership and advocate for green and clean energy for better footprint, cost efficiency, and a healthier environment,” Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, MI Executive Director, said during the project kick off meeting last September 29, 2020.

Under the “Key Technologies Research and Demonstration Application of Smart City Energy Network Cooperative Management and Operation and Optimization Over One Belt One Road Countries” project, MI will provide platforms for technical exchange, as well as deliver capacity strengthening support to deepen regional power connectivity and collaboration.

“From this research and development initiative, we can synergize energy management to optimize the operations of a holistic urban smart energy network in the Belt and Road countries,” said Mr. Li Licheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chairman of the Expert Committee of CSG. Mr. Licheng also serves as the lead of the project expert group.

The project is touted as a proactive government and private partnership response to the rising urbanization rate and increasing energy demand in the region. Through the project’s 2020 to 2023 run, joint research, development, and demonstration activities will be deployed to integrate energy consumption and maximize energy potentials.

Other project partners such as Southeast University, Tsinghua University, China Academy of Building Research, China Electric Power Research Institute, and NARI Company, Limited will each contribute scientific, engineering, power generation and transmission construction, and awareness-building support to set the region as the energy fulcrum and forerunner of clean energy transformation in the rest of Asia.
