PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Lancang-Mekong Countries (LMC) — Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam — are increasingly interconnected through transport, trade, and tourism. Among these sectors, transport plays a central role in driving economic growth and enhancing regional competitiveness. Improved transport and communication infrastructure, combined with more effective information exchange, are essential for the integration of regional markets — particularly through expanded land routes that promote cooperation and service quality. Despite this progress, the absence of a coordinated database and integrated information system for transport and logistics continues to hinder efficient cross-border trade. This lack of integration leads to fragmented data, limited transparency, and weak information sharing among stakeholders.
Recognizing these challenges, LMC countries — individually and in collaboration with bilateral and multilateral partners — have undertaken regulatory reforms, capacity-building initiatives, and infrastructure development. Nevertheless, common barriers remain. These include difficulties in ensuring system interoperability, closing data gaps, addressing shortages of skilled personnel, harmonizing national systems with regional frameworks, strengthening institutions, and upgrading digital infrastructure to support seamless regional integration.
