MI Invites Virtual Attendees to Participate in the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Workshop

October 21-23, 2024 – Khon Kaen, Thailand – The Mekong Institute (MI), in coordination with Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC), in collaboration with the China-ASEAN Business Center (CABC), and with the support from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund of China, is excited to announce the Regional Training Workshop on “Enhancing Trade and Investment Promotion of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Thailand and the Lancang-Mekong Region”. This highly anticipated event will be held at the Mekong Institute in Khon Kaen, Thailand, from October 21 to 23, 2024.

The workshop is also open to the public and stakeholders interested in participating online. (Click the Zoom link to register for attending online!)

The 2.5-day event aims to showcase SEZ development strategies in Thailand and the Lancang-Mekong (LM) region, providing valuable insights into investment promotion, sustainable SEZ development, and regional trade opportunities. Featuring expert-led panel discussions, presentations, and collaborative workshops, this event will attract key SEZ developers, government authorities, private sector representatives, and international organizations from across the region.

The training workshop contain five sessions:

  • Session 1 – Driving Growth: SEZ Development and Investment Promotion in Thailand
    • 1.1 Overview of the policies, strategies, investment incentives, and development progress for SEZs and economic corridors in Thailand
    • 1.2 Showcase investment opportunities in Northeastern Thailand (Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani)
  • Session 2 – SEZ Dialogue: Key Successes, Challenges, and Opportunities in the Lancang-Mekong Region.
  • Session 3 – Strategies for Sustainable SEZ Development and Investment: Expert and Practitioner Perspectives
  • Session 4 – Bridging Gaps: Investor Insights on SEZ Investment Promotion Strategies
  • Session 5 – Action Plan: Shaping Investment Promotion Strategies for SEZs in Thailand and Lancang-Mekong Region

Mrs. Guohua Liu

Director, Sustainable Energy & Environment (SEE) Department

Mrs. Liu Guohua is the Director of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Department at the Mekong Institute. Prior to this role, she worked in the Department of International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, where she played a key role in shaping and implementing China’s cooperation strategies with UN development agencies. During this time, Mrs. Liu was actively involved in advancing initiatives related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on climate change and green development. Additionally, she contributed to the evaluation of projects funded by various Chinese initiatives, such as the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund, etc.

In addition to her work in the Department of International Economic Affairs, Mrs. Liu has an extensive diplomatic background. She spent 7 years in the Department of African Affairs, followed by a 4-year tenure at the Chinese Embassy in Lao PDR, where she gained deep expertise in both Southeast Asian and African affairs. These diverse experiences have played a crucial role in shaping her approach to sustainable development and international collaboration, particularly in building regional partnerships and tackling global challenges like climate change.

She holds a Master’s degree in Economics, with a specialization in Finance, from the Central University of Finance and Economics, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, specializing in International Economics and Trade, from the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics.
