MI and Kasetsart University Forge Partnership for Regional Development

Bangkok, December 2, 2024 – The Mekong Institute (MI) and Kasetsart University (KU) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing human resource development, fostering regional cooperation, and driving innovation for sustainable growth across the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn, Executive Director of MI; Assoc. Prof. Apisit Songsasen, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Lifelong Learning, representing KU’s President; and Prof. Dokrak Marod, Vice President for Research and Internationalization.

The MOU outlines several collaborative initiatives, including joint research projects, knowledge exchange programs, capacity-building efforts, and the organization of conferences, workshops, and symposiums. A significant focus will be placed on enhancing student experiences at Kasetsart University while promoting the sharing of technical information to bolster research and innovation.

During the ceremony, Mr. Suriyan Vichitlekarn emphasized MI’s commitment to this partnership: “This MOU reflects our shared vision of fostering sustainable development in the GMS through collaborative research, training, and capacity-building. Together with KU, we aim to build a robust network of experts and resources that empower individuals and organizations in the region. Our focus will include areas such as Agri-Food System transformation, Nature-Based Solutions, and the sustainable utilization of agricultural resources while integrating natural resource conservation and promoting a low-carbon economy.”

Assoc. Prof. Songsasen echoed this sentiment, stating, “Kasetsart University is honored to partner with MI to advance regional cooperation and integration. This MOU underscores our dedication to leveraging academic excellence and innovation to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities facing our region.”

This partnership combines KU’s academic expertise with MI’s regional capacity-building experience to promote sustainable development across the GMS. Together, they aim to tackle critical issues such as climate change, food security, and sustainable agricultural practices.

The signing of this MOU represents a significant advancement in establishing a framework for ongoing collaboration that will benefit both institutions and contribute to the GMS’s sustainable development goals.
