Mekong Businesses Accelerate Decarbonization Through Specialized Training

Bangkok, Thailand – Businesses across the Mekong region are taking bold steps toward decarbonization following the successful completion of the Capacity Building for Decarbonization Acceleration held from February 17 to 19, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. Designed to equip companies and suppliers with the knowledge and tools to meet global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) compliance standards, enhance competitiveness, and integrate into sustainable supply chains, the three-day program empowered participants to develop actionable strategies for reducing carbon footprints and improving operational efficiency.

A total of 22 participants representing leading companies—including Hitachi Asai Thailand, Panasonic Energy Thailand, Sumitomo Corporation Thailand, Denso Thailand, Bangkok Komatsu Co. Ltd., Thai Auto Tools Chonburi Company Limited, NYC Industry Co., Ltd., and Siam Riken Industrial—attended the training. Through expert-led sessions, hands-on workshops, and case studies, attendees gained deeper insights into decarbonization solutions, regulatory compliance, and emerging market opportunities.

Dr. Nares Damrongchai, Executive Director and Director General of Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan), and Mr. Ryosuke Fujioka, Chief Representative of AMEICC Secretariat/AOTS Bangkok Office, opened the ceremony with remarks emphasizing the importance of strengthened partnerships and collaborative initiatives to accelerate industrial decarbonization and achieve regional sustainability goals.

Throughout the three-day training, participants conducted a Decarbonization Readiness Diagnosis, assessing their current carbon footprint and identifying key areas for improvement. Sessions on GHG emission visualization and reduction strategies provided a deeper understanding of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions calculations and mitigation approaches. Case studies from Volkswagen, Volvo, and NEC Corporation showcased real-world applications of sustainability strategies. Participants also engaged in workshops and roundtable discussions, formulating tailored decarbonization action plans and exchanging insights on long-term implementation.

The training is part of a two-year pilot project on Mekong Sustainable Supply Chains Transformation and Advancement (MekongSustain), designed to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of companies and suppliers in the automotive, textile, and food industries in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

This project aims to strengthen their competitiveness by integrating them into the supply chains of larger companies, with a focus on enhancing their ESG practices and aligning with market demands. The project offers a series of capacity-building activities to improve ESG performance, focusing on decarbonization and environmental sustainability. By participating in these programs, companies and suppliers will gain access to crucial knowledge, tools, and financing options to meet ESG requirements and establish connections with global markets, particularly with Japanese and other global technology solution providers.

Funded by the AEM-METI Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee (AMEICC) through the Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS), Japan, the project is implemented jointly by AOTS, the Mekong Institute, ABeam Consulting, and the Technology Promotion Association.
