The role of the freight and logistics sector in driving forward connectivity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region will be the core of discussion in this year’s Mekong Forum, organized by Mekong Institute (MI) and co-hosted by the Thailand Exhibition and Convention Bureau (TCEB).
With the theme, “Bridging Borders: GMS Connectivity for Inclusivity and Sustainability”, Mekong Forum 2019 gathers sector leaders, policymakers, development experts and regional stakeholders on July 24-25, 2019 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The seventh Mekong Forum organized by MI since 2011, this year’s gathering will emphasize on the integral role of the region’s freight and logistics sector in further paving the way for more connectivity across the region and ultimately, fostering enhanced inclusivity and sustainability.
MI Executive Director Dr. Watcharas Leelawath also points to the timeliness of the theme as Thailand’s Chairmanship of the ASEAN this year also highlights ‘seamless logistics’ as a key objective through the ‘connecting of connectivities.’
Expected to draw some 200 participants from key ministries and government agencies in the GMS countries, development organizations, academics and the business sector, Mekong Forum 2019 will tackle critical discussions on the infrastructural and legal frameworks needed by the logistics sector to contribute greatly to cross-border trade; the sector’s capacity building needs; and how digital technology can be tapped and maximized to transform the sector.
On July 25, a business matching event is also being held among selected logistics service providers and enterprises from the six GMS countries to offer a direct platform for networking, business linkage and exchange among local logistics businesses.
